What I try to say through my works is simple... just a simple message that follows: "Love all the creatures! Love everything that has life"! I have been trying to express this message in every one of my works.
Born in Toyonaka, Osaka, Japan, Osamu Tezuka was raised in Takarazuka, collecting insects and drawing from an early age. Although enrolled as medical student, at 18 Tezuka debuted as cartoonist for the four panel cartoon strip Ma-Cha’s Diary. Very quickly he became nationally famous with the successful publication of his longer stories, such as New Treasure Island and Lost World. Rather than practice medicine, Tezuka dedicated himself to what he loved more, comics and animation.

In his comics Tezuka was innovative, producing longer stories and more novelistic plots, and translating cinematic styles onto the panelled page. By 1950 he had established his position in comics with Jungle Emperor (also known as Kimba the White Lion). In 1952 he began serializing Tetsuwan Atomu (also known as AstroBoy) which continued until 1968, becoming one of his most popular and well-known works.

Importantly, Tezuka was also an animator. In 1961 he formed the animation studio Mushi Productions to produce his own creations, among them Tetsuwan Atomu, Jungle Emperor, Princess Knight and W3. Mushi Productions made not only these early Japanese television programmes, but also more adult-oriented theatrical features such as A Thousand and One Nights and Cleopatra. Tezuka’s creative input was as director, scenario writer, key drawing creator and art director. In 1968 he replaced Mushi with a new studio, Tezuka Productions. There he produced Japan’s first two-hour animated special, Bander Book, in 1978, and a new colour version of Tetsuwan Atomu in 1980.

Yet Tezuka’s animation was not fully contained within his famous commercial works. He also produced several experimental short films, pioneering within them new techniques of animation, and winning numerous awards at international festivals. Almost all of these short films are included in this torrent (the only one missing is Cigarettes And Ashes).
