"Escaflowne is a rare shoujo/fantasy show in that it tries to be enjoyable to an audience wider than 'average-looking high school girls still looking for their first boyfriend'. It manages to do that mainly because there are some more engaging than usual male characters and a typical but well told storyline without TOO much soap bs. Mecha fans will probably enjoy the fantasy-mecha thing that's going on in the show but I don't think it's more than slightly engaging.
Probably the main problem of Escaflowne is Hitomi. She's your typical annoying shoujo heroine - average looking (or acually in this show - wolf-ugly), flat-chested girl without any real character - looking for her first love blah-blah, while saying all the typical bs that shoujo-heroines-transported-to-another-world are supposed to say so the shoujo audience won't feel miserable. To sum it up - I found her thoroughly disgusting. Most of the other characters weren't anything spectacular either but I definitely liked Folken.
The visuals are pretty good, even though the style is often a pain to look at. The music is very good for a mid-90s TV show but every once in a while there's a sucky jpop song. The Ending song is almost shockingly horrible and really out of place.
Btw the end of Escaflowne is painfully typical. I think I've already seen it at least 5-6 times in other shows.
Anyway, despite all its shortcomings I liked the show and would recommend it."
