Шинджи е много по-добре направен герой от Аято. Най-малкото може успешно да ми лази по нервите и да го мразя. Докато Аято е такова безлично кухо мекотело че все едно го няма.
Както бях писал на AnimeNfo:
"Actually I don't think that the lack of originality is the show's main problem. The worst part is the lead character Ayato. I was never able to sympathise with his teen-mecha-pilot problems since he was way too empty and shallow to make me feel for him and it didn't seem like he meant a word he was saying. Most of the other characters were at least somewhat interesting, even though a few made a short but unfortunate appearance just so they could die horribly and thus cause a dramatic impact on the more important characters."
Също много ми беше забавно как постоянно изпадаше в разни random Шинджи-настроения без особен повод. Един друг пич много добре се е изказал по въпроса:
"Ayato doesn't seem to have any set personality at ALL. Yay, he can draw. At some times he'll be emotional and thoughtful, some times angry and moody, and others calm and composed. This isn't even to adapt to what's going on around him; they're the personalities he assumes. He continually posed the question "Who am I? I wanna know who I am. Bla bla bla." Well, that makes two of us, buddy. His lack of distinct characteristics makes him seem poorly written and at the end of the anime I knew next to nothing about Ayato's character on the whole. Oh, and his screaming was really annoying."
